1872 brought the railroad to Random Lake and many businesses to follow. In 1890,
Matthew B. Heinen built and opened the Heinen Hotel and Saloon with a delivery stable on the
grounds. Salesmen would come to Random Lake by train and rent a buggy to sell their wares to
the locals. The village constable resided at the hotel and there was even a prisoner who broke out
by tying sheets together.

Thoughtout the years, there have been a number of different owners/names of the restaurant.
You might have known The Homefront as Edlee’s Inn, The Random House, Bauer’s Towne House,
Company F or Scholz’s on Second.

With the help and suport of family and friends, in October of 1997, we opened The Homefront.
Since then we have been enjoying the company of many new friends.
